The cinema experience

The Southgate Cinema is unique to Melbourne in many ways. It provides an outdoor experience while remaining undercover inside the centre, as you sit back and relax in a deck chair under the open atrium and watch the city sky fade away.

The Cinema is also Melbourne's only silent cinema – patrons are provided with individual headphones and audio kits to listen to the film, while sitting back and relaxing amidst the hustle and bustle of the restaurant and shopping precinct.

As each film begins after dusk, patrons can enjoy dinner, drinks or browse through Southgate's retail stores before each movie commences. Many restaurants have express dining offers which cater to pre-theatre and movie patrons, allowing you time to meet with friends and catch up before the movie commences.

Bookings and screening times

Southgate Cinema runs every Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Movies commence from 7pm after dusk and vary for individual films.

Patrons with pre-booked tickets are required to check-in an hour before each film commences, from 7pm. Any tickets not checked in by 7pm will be re-released to nearby waiting customers.

If you have not booked tickets online and want to see a film that evening, you can place your name on the wait list and be first in line to receive any re-released tickets.

The films

The film program for the cinema has been designed to reflect Melbourne's film culture, screening classics alongside popular and art house releases, as well as documentaries and more.
