How much does it cost to attend Southgate Cinema?

Southgate Cinema bookings are free, however spaces are limited. We recommend you book online early to avoid disappointment.

How many seats does Southgate Cinema hold?

The Cinema holds up to 70 patrons at any one time.

What time do the movies start?

Each movie starts from 7pm after dusk. This varies depending on Melbourne's sunsets over summer as the nights get longer and then shorter again. Exact movie commencement times will be posted at the Cinema Desk on each night.

As a guide, movies over summer will commence from the following times:

November From 7.15pm December From 7.45pm January From 8pm February From 7.45pm

Can I bring food and drinks into Southgate Cinema?

Small wrapped cold snacks and non-alcoholic beverages purchased from within Southgate can be consumed in the Cinema. These include chocolates, confectionery, water and soft drinks. Hot food and drinks, BYO food, drinks or eskies are not permitted.

We recommend dining at one of Southgate's many restaurants, bars, cafes or food court before the movie to enjoy a full dining experience

Where is Southgate Cinema?

The Southgate Cinema is located on the upper level of Southgate, near Red Emperor and Aero Plus. You can enter the upper level via:

  • St Kilda Road entrance
  • Lifts from the Car Park to the upper level
  • The mid level escalators, or
  • The podium level

How long do the movies go for?

Each movie length varies, however run on average for 90 minutes each.

How many tickets can I book?

As spaces within the Cinema are limited, each individual patrons can book up to 4 tickets.

Can I book a private function in the Southgate Cinema?

Southgate Cinema is open by arrangement for private functions on Monday, Thursday and Sunday evenings. To enquire about a private function please contact us.

What should I wear to Southgate Cinema?

While the Southgate Cinema is indoors, Southgate is an open air centre. We recommend patrons wear clothing layers or bring a jacket in case the weather turns cool on a particular night. Blankets or rugs are permitted.

How do the headphones work?

Each patron is provided with a set of disposable headphones with their audio heat set. The headphones plug directly into the audio headset, and patrons can then alter the volume using the dial on the front to suit.

The headphones receive audio via infra-red sensors located in the Cinema. Patrons are reminded not to fold their arms in front of the receivers as this could alter the audio experience.

At the end of the film, patrons return the audio headset and headphones to the Cinema desk. Disposable headphones are then sent for recycling. Alternatively, patrons can keep the headphones to use next time, or bring their own. Each headset has a universal jack to allow input for most headphone products.

What happens to the disposable headphones?

The disposable headphones are sent for recycling after each individual use.

Can I bring my own headphones?

Yes. The audio headsets have a universal jack which can accommodate most headphone inputs. We welcome patrons to bring their own headphones to the movies.

Is Southgate Cinema hearing loop enabled?

Yes. If you require hearing loop enabled headphones, please advise our Cinema Manager when checking in your tickets. Hearing loop enabled headset works throughout the whole cinema so you can still sit wherever you prefer to enjoy the movie experience.

I cannot sit in a deck chair. Can I still come to the Southgate Cinema?

Each deck chair is adjustable to suit individual preferences. However, if you cannot sit in a deck chair for health or personal reasons, please see our Cinema Manager who can arrange a Director's Chair for you as an alternative.

Southgate Cinema is also accessible to wheelchair patrons. Simply speak with our Cinema Manager to discuss your seating requirements.

What can't I bring to the Southgate Cinema?

The following are not permitted at Southgate Cinema:

  • Filming and recording equipment
  • Eskies
  • Food or beverages purchased outside Southgate
  • Individual chairs or outdoor furniture
  • Alcohol
  • Hot food and drinks

Where can I eat before the movie?

Southgate's restaurants, cafes and bars provide a range of express dining options for patrons seeking a quick dinner before a show or movie. Simply browse our range of dining options or visit our food court before the movies.

I've booked online. What time do I need to arrive at Southgate Cinema?

If you have booked online you will have received an email confirmation to confirm your booking.

Patrons are required to check-in for the film between 6pm and 7pm each evening, before the movie commences.

Any unclaimed tickets at 7pm will be re-release to nearby waiting patrons on the waiting list.

Are tickets available at the door?

A limited number of unclaimed tickets will be available from the Cinema Desk on the upper level from 7pm each evening before the movies commence. Patrons are welcome to arrive early to put their name on a wait list for unclaimed tickets.

What ratings are the movies?

All movies are rated M15+ and under.
